We got our sign!!!
YAY!!! We got our sign, that has been in the process since July. Here is the background of the sign on our street.
We have lived here 2 years next month, and even though our home seems far from traffic, its really not. This really wasn't a concern before, as Owen and the other two never went near the end of the driveway. That all changed this past spring, I would load the kids up in the van - Owen would take off. He wasn't "bolting" for the driveway, he instead would wander and see something in the sky, and really not pay attention to where he was going.. and OPPS! End of the driveway, and almost has been hit 3 times.
Cars fly down our street, which is surprising because we are not near a busy intersection or area, so I am not sure why - but it happens. So, I started to do some investigating, and found out with a recommendation from Owens diagnosing Dr (Dr. Snyder) to the City of Niagara Falls, then in 4-8 weeks we would get our sign. The signs I saw in Fonthill, St. Catharines, and Welland all said, "Autistic Child In Area", so we were really hoping for the same one.
Instead, we found out the City Of Niagara Falls doesn't have that sign, instead they have, "Disabled Child In Area". Something is better than nothing right? The concern I have with our sign, is when someone hears the word disabled, they think of a child maybe in a wheelchair? Autism can be VERY hard to, "see" on a child, in Owens case, he looks very typical and a car might just assume he is, and not slow down and Owen gets hit.
I am in the process of emailing our Mayor, and hopefully in time Niagara Falls will be able to get the Autism specific sign :)
But for now, this is perfect, and I am so glad we got our sign to keep Owen safe.
